Police have appealed for information from the community after a man attempted to holdup a business at Newtown overnight.

About 8pm yesterday (Tuesday 21 April 2015), a 50-year-old woman was working behind the counter of a convenience store in Carillon Avenue when a man entered.

The man who wore gloves and a mask walked to the rear of the store and confronted the woman.

He was armed with handgun, which he pointed at the woman and demanded cash.

The woman was able to flee to a storeroom and locked herself in.

When she started calling for help the offender searched several drawers behind the counter and fled, empty handed.

Fortunately the woman was not injured during the incident.

Officers attached to Newtown Local Area Command were notified and attended a short time later establishing a crime scene.

A search of the area could not locate the man who is described as being 183cm tall, slim build with dark clothing, gloves and a mask.

Officers are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to come forward and contact Newtown Police or Crime Stoppers on 1 800 333 000.
