About GRAPPLING - Ground Combat (GGC)
Grappling-Ground Combat class—a specialised program designed to bridge the gap between standing self-defence and the realities of ground-based confrontations.
In real-world scenarios, fights can quickly go to the ground, where traditional striking alone may not be enough. This class builds on the core principles of Krav Maga—aggressiveness, efficiency, and survival—while incorporating essential grappling skills to help you control, escape, and dominate in close-quarters combat.
What You’ll Learn in Grappling-Ground Combat
Sambo is one of the best martial arts one can learn for self-defence. It is one of the rare fighting systems that will teach you how to fight wherever the fight takes place. Unlike some other arts, Sambo is not one dimensional and it covers all elements of fighting similar to MMA does. Here are some of the crucial skills you will learn in Sambo that you can apply in street fighting:
- Stand-up grappling — Clinch work, takedown defense, throws, and transitions to maintain control or regain your feet.
- Ground grappling — Positional control, escapes from bad positions (mount, side control, guard), and techniques to prevent being pinned or submitted.
- Strikes integrated with grappling — Effective punches, elbows, knees, and hammerfists from standing ranges and on the ground, including ground-and-pound principles adapted for self-defense.
- Offensive and defensive ground combatives — Building a complete toolkit for attacking when opportunities arise and defending against strikes, chokes, joint locks, and multiple threats while on the ground.
- Reality-based drills — High-intensity scenarios that simulate street environments, emphasizing getting back to your feet quickly, avoiding prolonged ground fighting, and handling weapons or additional attackers.
This class complements our existing Adult Mixed Krav Maga, Dynamic Striking, Women’s Self-Defence, Kids, and Teens programs, providing a more comprehensive skill set for those who want to elevate their ability to handle dynamic, unpredictable encounters. Whether you’re a beginner looking to round out your self-defense training or an experienced practitioner wanting to sharpen your ground game, Grappling Ground Combat delivers practical, no-nonsense techniques in a safe, progressive environment.

At SGS Krav Maga in Sydney, self-defence training isn’t just about punches, drills, and sweat. It’s about mindset, identity, consistency, and growth. Over time, I’ve distilled my personal training philosophy into a set of principles — all beginning with the letter P. These aren’t motivational clichés. They’re practical mental tools...
Sorry not sorry. Bodybuilding is not self-defence. Confusing the two can get you hurt. Let’s say it loud for the guys flexing in the mirror right now: Having a big chest, 20-inch arms, and visible abs does NOT make you good at self-defence.In fact, it can sometimes make things worse....
In a world where confrontations arise unexpectedly, many people cling to hope that staying passive will decrease aggression. They think: “If I just stay calm and don’t fight back, the threat will pass.” “Maybe if I just don’t hit him and I just stay here nicely, he won’t hit me.”...

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is widely celebrated for its effective grappling techniques, leverage, and control in controlled environments. However, the harsh reality of street violence often introduces dangerous variables such as multiple attackers, weapons, and unpredictable tactics—including biting. The following real-world examples involving highly skilled BJJ black belts tragically illustrate how...

Modern children face unique challenges: they’re easily triggered, glued to screens, and often reluctant to move their bodies, which has lead to up to 25 per cent of children in Australia being either overweight or obese. This trend has seeped into self-defence classes, where kids drop out prematurely and miss out...
